چکیده

Therapeutic methods based on efferent signals from the patients’ brain have been studied extensively in the field of brain-computer interfaces and applied to paralysed and stroke patients. Invasive stimulation is used as a therapeutic tool for patients with Parkinson disease, intractable chronic pain and other neurological diseases. We give a short review of currently used applications for cortical stimulation for stroke patients and braincomputer interfaces for paralyzed patients. We propose a refined approach for stroke rehabilitation as well as the extension of the use of invasive cortical stimulation to ALS patients with an experimental setup inspired by classical conditioning to facilitate the communication with brain-computer interfaces for LIS and CLIS patients. A closed-loop system is described with sophisticated methods for the identification of recording and stimulation sites, feature extraction and adaptation of stimulation algorithms to the patient in order to design a bidirectional cortical communication interface (BCCI).

Investigations on probabilistic analysis synthesis systems using bidirectional HMMs

This contribution deals with preliminary investigations on the behavior of the cortical algorithm in probabilistic hierarchic analysis synthesis systems. Such a subsystem is one the key components of Cognitive Dynamic Systems or Cognitive User Interfaces respectively. Both systems are typically characterized by the cybernetic circle that describes the perception of the environment along the sen...

Behavioral and anatomical characterization of the bilateral sciatic nerve chronic constriction (bCCI) injury: correlation of anatomic changes and responses to cold stimuli

BACKGROUND Unilateral constrictive sciatic nerve injury (uCCI) is a common neuropathic pain model. However, the bilateral constrictive injury (bCCI) model is less well studied, and shows unique characteristics. In the present study, we sought to correlate effects of bCCI on nocifensive responses to cold and mechanical stimuli with selected dorsal horn anatomic markers. bCCI or sham ligation of ...

Shaping the Dynamics of a Bidirectional Neural Interface

Progress in decoding neural signals has enabled the development of interfaces that translate cortical brain activities into commands for operating robotic arms and other devices. The electrical stimulation of sensory areas provides a means to create artificial sensory information about the state of a device. Taken together, neural activity recording and microstimulation techniques allow us to e...

A Bidirectional Brain-Machine Interface Algorithm That Approximates Arbitrary Force-Fields

We examine bidirectional brain-machine interfaces that control external devices in a closed loop by decoding motor cortical activity to command the device and by encoding the state of the device by delivering electrical stimuli to sensory areas. Although it is possible to design this artificial sensory-motor interaction while maintaining two independent channels of communication, here we propos...

TA-GC cloning: A new simple and versatile technique for the directional cloning of PCR products for recombinant protein expression

During the last few decades, the recombinant protein expression finds more and more applications. The cloning of protein-coding genes into expression vectors is required to be directional for proper expression, and versatile in order to facilitate gene insertion in multiple different vectors for expression tests. In this study, the TA-GC cloning method is proposed, as a new, simple and efficien...
